Main profile

One of the main profiles of the Department of Behavioural Sciences of the University of Pécs Medical School is the undergraduate and postgraduate education to acquaint medical students with modern knowledge of behavioural sciences that are essential and interconnected with their future profession and to give an opportunity to acquire the communicational and other skills of the patient-doctor relation. In addition to education, the Department's other main activity is scientific work, which ranges from basic researches to clinical applied ones. Besides these two main activities, the department organizes trainings and courses for students and staff of the faculty, through which they can develop their skills, abilities to work, learn more effectively, and receive help with life management issues.

Research

CLINICAL BEHAVIOURAL SCIENCE RESEARCH GROUP

Our research group includes a wide range of clinical researches. Understanding the biopsychosocial and social background of neurological, internal medicine, and psychiatric disorders are at the focus of our research. Studies of the groups are multidisciplinary, these involve the knowledge from cognitive psychology, neurology, philosophy, ethics, psychosomatics, and psychiatry. Our main research fields are the follows: clinical neuropsychology, health psychology, ethics, psychotherapy. The clinical neuropsychological research focuses on the cognitive background of Parkinson's disease and temporal lobe epilepsy. Health psychological research is interested in the internal (diabetes, cardiovascular) disease. The main research field of Ethics is to understand the ethical questions of genetical interventions. The research of the psychotherapy studies the effective treatment of rehabilitation on neurotic disorders. Members: Dr. Kázmér Karádi (leader, kazmer.karadi@aok.pte.hu), Dr. István Tiringer (leader, istvan.tiringer@aok.pte.hu), István Hartung, Dr. Beáta Laki

APPLIED DATA SCIENCE AND ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE GROUP

Applied Data Science and Artificial Intelligence Group (ADSAIG) at the University of Pécs focuses on large-scale data management, data mining and data analysis using technologies from data handling, statistical machine learning and deep learning.  The goals of this group are to build systems and algorithms to extract knowledge, find patterns, generate insights and predictions from diverse data for various applications and visualization in many fields of interest. We have good relationships with several industrial partners like Microsoft, IBM, Arrow, ESTS We also have a fruitful cooperation with Faculty of Informatics at University of ELTE. Leader: Dr. Ádám Feldmann (adam.feldmann@aok.pte.hu)

HEALTH BEHAVIOUR RESEARCH GROUP

We are interested in acquiring a further understanding of health behaviour, with a particular emphasis on mental health and work-life/study-life balance.  Practical utilization of our research is also important for us, thus we use study results to develop interventions and trainings in order to help students and medical staff members live a healthier lifestyle and master their career challenges. Besides self-report methods, we also use various qualitative study designs to advance the scientific understanding of the interactions among biological, physical and psychosocial aspects of health behaviour and intercultural competences of medical students and medical staff members (e.g.: doctors, nurses, etc.). We are also interested in studies about significant predictors of career preferences and academic success of medical students. You are welcome to join us and conduct studies as part of your thesis-work, research project or PhD. Members: Dr. Béla Birkás (leader, bela.birkas@aok.pte.hu), Dr. Nóra Faubl, Prof. Dr. Zsuzsanna Füzesi, Dr. Boróka Gács

COGNITIVE NEUROSCIENCE RESEARCH GROUP

The Group combines the methods of neuroscience and cognitive psychology to explore many aspects of human BEHAVIOUR. The methods incorporate the procedures of functional brain imaging, electrophysiology, and psychophysics. Of the current research activities, three directions can be highlighted. First, many experiments are addressed to the neurocognitive characteristics of acute sensation of pain, and acute mental fatigue. Second, we explore the widespread phenomena of internet and smart-phone addiction. Our main question is that how the excessive, addictive use of these info-communication technologies affects the structure and the function of the nervous system. Finally, in a Lab dedicated to virtual reality research, we extensively investigate individuals with tasks performed in virtual reality.  In virtual reality, the body may be present in two places at the same time. Our projects are addressed to revealing normal and psychopathological responses to this artificial self-duplication both in clinical and non-clinical populations. The Group welcomes applications for undergraduate research and doctoral studies. Members: Prof. Dr János Kállai (leader, janos.kallai@aok.pte.hu), Dr. Árpád Csathó (leader, arpad.csatho@aok.pte.hu), Dr. Gergely Darnai, András Matuz, Eszter Simon
