Main profile

The teaching and research work of the Department is related to preventive medicine and public health.

 

Main research activity

The Department performs epidemiological and sociological researches with the aim of assessing health status, quality of life and the lifestyle, behavioural and environmental factors influencing it, on the one hand at the general population level and on the other hand among various population groups.
Topics of ongoing research work include health status and lifestyle of pregnant women; childhood prevention of obesity; knowledge and attitudes related to antibiotics and vaccinations.
The Department participates in the PhD training: in the Preventive Medicine sub-program of the Doctoral School of Interdisciplinary Medicine, established in 2002; within the framework of the doctoral program 22 students obtained PhD degrees so far.

 

Educational activities

Within the framework of the undergraduate courses of health science related faculties, preventive medicine and public health, and its subfields (e.g. environmental health, social and health policy, foundations of evidence-based medicine) are taught in Hungarian and English, some topics of occupational medicine in Hungarian, and medical sociology in Hungarian, English and German.
Under the supervision of the Department staff, several students carry out research work, the results of them are successfully presented at local and national Scientific Student Conferences.
As an accredited place, the professional staff of the Department also actively participate in the education and postgraduate training of specialists.

Publications

Scientific results are regularly published in national and foreign journals. According to the department's bibliography, 182 journal articles in English and 128 in Hungarian have been published since 2000.

  • 9 November 2018 Scientific meeting entitled “Effective communication as a public health task”
  • The Environmental Health Working Committee of the Medical Committee of the Regional Committee of Hungarian Academy of Sciences localized in Szeged and the Department of Public Health of the University of Szeged within the framework of the Hungarian Science Celebration 2018 national series of events commemorated the former head of our Department, the former chairman of the Environmental Health Working Committee, Professor Illés Dési, who passed away in January 2018.
