1) Main profile
The main task of the Department of Public Health Sciences is to provide a wide range of training in public health and health promotion in the BSc and MSc programmes of the Faculty of Health Sciences of Semmelweis University. Its most important task is to provide theoretical and practical training of public health professionals at the designated training levels. The subjects taught by the Department cover a very broad spectrum from public health epidemiology, chemical safety and occupational health to food and environmental health, including classical health protection functions.
2) Main (research) activity
The department's research is focusing on environmental health risks, additionally a second leading theme is a complex approach to infection control activities. Within these themes, the department is currently actively engaged in research activities based on the departmental research portfolio.
3) Educational activities
The department teaches subjects related to public health, from classical public health to the new public health approach within the rapidly evolving health sciences, in both theoretical and practical courses. The leading subjects taught over several semesters are Microbiology, Epidemiology of Infectious Diseases, Prevention of Infections, Occupational Health - Chemical Safety, Food and Catering Hygiene and Food Safety, Environmental Health, Public Health, Public Health and Preventive Medicine, Health Promotion Strategies. The teaching activities of the Department are dedicated to teaching (both undergraduate and postgraduate) the latest techniques and methods required to meet the challenges of today's world.

4) Consultancy activities
The teaching members of the department are also active participants as tutors and lecturers in the international accredited educational partnerships of the Faculty of Health Sciences, the European Union Socrates Programme and the COHEHRE Academy (Consortium of Institutes of Higher Education in Health and Rehabilitation in Europe).
The teaching members of the Department’s staff are active participants in national and international scientific societies and their events (Society of the Hungarian Hygienists, Hungarian Society for Infection Control, The Hungarian Association of Public Health Training and Research Institutions, European Society of Clinical Microbiology and Infectious Diseases). The Head of Department performs the focal tasks of the WHO Environment and Health in Hungary and is a co-chair of the Environment and Health Task Force of the European Environment and Health Process.
